sublimation

n. A defense mechanism which converts unconscious negative drives and desires into positive and productive behavior. In classical psychoanalytic terms, our impulse is to fulfill the wishes of the id (often sexual and aggressive urges). However, through the reality principle, the ego transforms these urges and energies to fit appropriately within the larger societal context. From this perspective all choices that are appropriate and expected within society, both large (e.g., choosing 
a career or a partner) and small (e.g., keeping one's house tidy, creative endeavors), are thought of as sublimations of base desires. This process is unconscious; the individual using this defense mechanism is only aware of his or her choices and decisions and is completely unaware of the urges that have been transformed. Sublimation is the ultimate goal of the ego and is therefore thought to be the most positive defense mechanism in both the short and the long term. – DGa
