kainic acid

n. A neurotoxic amino acid found in some species of red algae and the seaweed Digenea simplex, which potentiates the neurotransmitter glutamate and destroys postsynaptic cells with glutamate receptors. It is sometimes used in research to destroy small areas of the brain.
