The internal portion of the adrenal gland, which secretes the catecholamine hormones epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine (noradrenaline) in response to sympathetic nervous system stimulation. These actions are catabolic: the production of these hormones leads to the immediate availability of physical energy for work, heat, or energy storage. - VS
