repetition compulsion
n. The tendency to repeat unfinished or traumatic events in order to deal with them. The repetition can take the form of daydreams, storytelling, perception that present relationships are the same as old ones or emotional relations with a therapist that mirror those of childhood. In psychoanalytic theory, this is believed to be an attempt to deal with emotional conflicts from childhood and often takes the form of projections in therapy.
