visual pigment
n. A chemical in the rod or cone of the eye which undergoes a change in state when struck by a photon, which then causes changes in the electrochemical state of the cell, which in turn may lead to generation of a neural impulse causing us to see light. In the rods this chemical is known as rhodopsin; the different kinds in cone cells are called iodopsins.
