social anxiety disorder

n. A severe and persistent fear of acting in a way which will invite embarrassment and humiliation in social or performance situations so that the person avoids the situations even knowing the fears to be unreasonable, 
thus causing distress and dysfunction in the person's daily living. Also called social phobia.
