adaptation syndrome
n. A three-stage description of reaction to continuing stress in which there is an immediate alarm reaction in which physiological and mental arousal rises, a resistance stage in which mental and physical arousal remain high and the body adapts to the high stress level, and then an exhaustion phase in which mental and physical resistance to stress collapses. ► See also GENERAL ADAPTATION SYNDROME
