configurative culture
n. A culture in which one's contemporaries instead of one's elders are the cultural icons one learns from and upon whom one models one's self. As an example, it has been argued that U.S. culture became a con- figurative culture in the 1960s and then returned to a postfigurative culture in the 1980s in which the elder generation is the one to whom young persons turn for lore and models.
