1. n. A markedly unpleasant emotion experienced when one has been exposed to the others as in some way deficient, which usually includes a strong sense of self-consciousness and desire to hide. 2. n. A markedly unfortunate incident, as in the statement “It is a shame that child was killed by lightning.” 3. v. To expose a deficiency of others in a public way, thus subjecting them to the scorn or derision of others.
