cognitive therapy
n. (CT) A form of psychotherapy that attempts to alter the content of irrational or distorted automatic and conscious thoughts so as to bring about positive change in the individual. It includes a belief that thoughts, emotions, and behavior are aspects of a single system in which changing any one affects the others. The therapist takes an active role in helping the client notice, evaluate, and revise his or her thinking to more realistic and so more useful patterns.
