n. 1. The set of abilities which allow an individual to adapt to the people around him or her through experience so as most easily to meet their needs and contribute to the well-being of the society of all people. 2. Emotional intelligence, which includes the capacities to perceive, appraise, and express one's own emotions effectively as well as to understand others' emotions and make use of that information in guiding one's own behavior.
