categorical perception

n. The perception of a thing as distinctly of one kind or type, despite ambiguity in the stimulus characteristics which might lead to a different categorical judgment. Thus when we see a person, we see him or her as male or female, although some males look like females and some females look like males in the conditions in which they are being seen.
