diazepam

n. A member of the benzodiazepine family of drugs which is a central nervous system depressant and is used as an anxiolytic, in alleviating the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal, as a muscle relaxant, and as an anticonvulsant. It has a long half-life and is sold under the brand name Valium.
