adrenergic neurons

n. Also known as catecholaminergic neurons in neural transmission. The transmitters in these neurons are the catecholamines dopamine, norepinephrine (noradrenaline), and epinephrine (adrenaline). Adrenergic neurons are part of the central nervous system’s regulation of attention, mood, movement, and reinforcement (reward). In addition, in the autonomic nervous system, the postganglionic sympathetic neurons compose an adrenergic response system active in stress, increasing blood flow to the skeletal muscles, increasing heart rate, and raising blood sugar levels, for a fight-or-flight response.  - VS
