arable land

n. the amount of land on which food can be grown that will allow for consumption and survival. A country may have a large total land size, but only part of it will be arable land. Arable land has been shown to be an important factor in influencing the creation of human cultures. Cultures in areas where arable land is scarce will be different than those in areas where arable land is abundant.
