shaman

n. A spiritual leader or priest in a small culture not usually respected by larger cultures. Shamanism involves an immense variety of traditional beliefs and practices which vary in different cultures. As in Christian and other larger cultures, shamans are often consulted to intercede with supernatural powers to heal the sick, obtain good fortune, or otherwise intervene in human affairs. The position of shamans is often a hereditary one in which the craft is passed from father to son or other close family member.
