obsession

n. A recurrent and persistent thought, image, idea, or impulse that causes the person distress and seems intrusive and inappropriate and beyond one's will to stop. Obsessions are often quite frustrating as they seem alien to the self, and yet the person is unable to prevent or stop the thought process involved.
