gender dysphoria

n. The psychological state of discomfort or dissatisfaction with the individual's social assignment as either male or female, usually made on the basis of the genitalia. The person does not experience a tolerable unity of personal gender identity, anatomical sexual characteristics, and the social expression of a corresponding gender role. There are multiple contributing factors and social manifestations. Some individuals may seek to alter physical aspects of their bodies associated with being male, female, or in-between. Other individuals may seek to alter the way they participate in male or female or transgendered social roles, or their internalized conceptualizations of their gender.
