cannabis
n. Three related plant species (Cannabis indica, C. rudcalis, and C. sativa), all of whose leaves and flowers contain intoxicating cannabinoid chemicals and especially delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which produce mild euphoria, relaxation, and increased appetite and attention to sensory stimuli and inhibit memory when smoked or ingested. Some persons experience increased anxiety when using cannabis, and hallucinations and other sensory distortions occur at high dose levels. Cannabis is not generally considered addictive. Commonly called marijuana or hemp, it is grown in many areas of the world for its fiber, which makes strong rope and woven products.
