Any of about 5,000–9,000 small balloonshaped structures on the tongue and in other parts of the mouth and larynx containing several dozen taste receptor cells in the interior, which send microvilli out through a hole in the apex which sample the liquid they encounter and generate either sweet, sour, bitter, or salt sensations.
