naltrexone
n. A long-lived opiate antagonist that binds to opiate receptors without having sedative or depressant effects, thus preventing opiates from binding to them. It can precipitate withdrawal symptoms in individuals addicted to opiates. Since it prevents opiates from having their usual effects, it has been used as an adjunct to treatment for opiate addiction and has been used in the treatment of alcoholism as well.
