superior colliculus

n. Either of two small bumps below the pineal gland near the bottom of the brain which receive a large tract of neural fibers from the optic nerve and connect both with the lateral geniculate nucleus and the tectospinal tract, which is involved in startle reactions and orienting movement of the head toward visual stimuli.
