ovarian follicle

n. Any one of numerous very small fluid-filled sacs in the ovary in which an ovum develops. At ovulation one sac in the ovary ruptures, releasing an ovum into the fallopian tube, where it may or may not be fertilized and turn into an embryo, while the ruptured follicle becomes part of the corpus luteum. Also called Graafi an follicle.
