nonidentical twins

n. Two babies born of the same mother who shared their gestational period and were formed from the unions of two separate sperm and ova and generally share about half their genes. By contrast, identical twins are born of an embryo that splits in two and develops into two separate babies with identical genes. Also called fraternal twins.
