monoamine oxidase

n. (MAO) A hormone present in the mitochondrial membranes of almost all human tissues which metabolizes or breaks down monoamines such as the neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. There are A and B forms of MAO with the A form predominating in the brain and the B form predominating in the digestive tract.
