Zipf's law

n. 1. The observation that in natural languages there is a power relation between frequency of use and rank such that the most common word is used about twice as often as the second most common word, which is used about twice as often as the fourth most common word, and so on. 2. The suggestion that there is an equilibrium between uniformity and diversity.
