gamete

n. Either the ovum or the sperm, which must unite to form a zygote in the process of sexual reproduction. Each gamete has half the number of chromosomes that is present in the rest of the cells in the body, and these join to form the chromosomes in all the cells in the new body excepting the new gametes, which will have half of the chromosomes from each of the parent gametes.
