active vocabulary

n. The words a person actually uses in normal speech or writing as opposed to the words a person knows but seldom uses in actual speech or writing. In contemporary society most adults can identify the meaning of the word heretofore but almost never actually use the word in speaking or writing. From early language acquisition on, the total number of words a person can understand is much larger than the number of words he/she typically uses.
