sex chromosome

n. A strand of DNA and proteins that carries the genetic predisposition to be male or female. They are often referred to as X and Y chromosomes as the shape of the female version looks like an X under a powerful microscope while the male version looks like a Y. All people have at least one X chromosome, and females have two X chromosomes while males have an X chromosome from their mother and a Y chromosome from their father.
