smooth muscle

n. The muscles found in the digestive system, in blood vessels, around the eyeballs, around hair follicles, and in internal organs with the exception of the heart. Smooth muscles lack the striations of skeletal muscles; are generally under the control of the autonomic nervous system, which usually moves them in slow, rhythmic contractions; and can maintain tension for long periods without fatigue.
