An inability to resist impulses to steal or shoplift despite absence of need for the stolen objects, conscious attempts to resist the impulse, and understanding that the habit of stealing has negative consequences. This is one of many impulse control disorders, all of which involve inability to resist an impulse to engage in a pattern of behavior the person knows is dysfunctional and feels unable to resist despite his or her best efforts to do so.
