trace conditioning

n. A form of classical conditioning in which a conditioned stimulus is presented and after a time delay an unconditioned stimulus is presented. Eventually the unconditioned stimulus is likely to produce the conditioned response, suggesting that a memory trace from the conditioned stimulus lasts over the time delay.
