terror management theory
n. A set of ideas suggesting that the control of death-related thinking and anxiety is the primary function of human society and the basic motivation in all human thinking and behavior. It asserts that high self-esteem and perceiving the self as a member of a powerful and stable society are the most successful ways of warding off death anxiety and avoiding recognition of their own mortality.
