self-affirmation theory

n. The theory that supposes that people are motivated to maintain positive views of themselves as competent, moral, emotionally stable and well-adjusted, and able to deal with the stresses of life. When confronted with negative information about the self, people feel uncomfortable and tend either to ignore it and affirm some other aspect of self or to find a way to resolve the inconsistency that allows them to maintain a positive sense of self.
