reticular formation

n. A small but thick band of neurons and neural fibers in the brainstem which extends from the medulla oblongata to the midbrain; has a wide net of connections, including the cortex, thalamus, cerebellum, and spinal cord; and is thought to be important to the sleep-wake cycle, alertness, and general arousal level, as well as posture and voluntary muscle activity.
