reactance theory

n. The idea that in many circumstances people will seek to avoid having their choices or options limited by others or restore them when they have already been limited. This includes the notions that an attractive object becomes more attractive when access to it has been curtailed and that when a person feels pressured to choose a particular option, that option becomes less attractive and the person becomes more likely to choose in a direction against the experienced pressure.
