parsimony principle

n. The basic scientific principle that the simplest explanation is the best one. Simplicity is defined as a combination of making the fewest assumptions, supposing the existence of the fewest theoretical constructs, and supposing the fewest unobserved forces. Also called Occam's Razor or the economy principle.
