paradox

n. 1. A logically valid argument based on accepted premises which yields a conclusion 
which contradicts some of the premises from which it was derived. 2. A surprising result in science. 3. A semantic paradox is one arising from a possible but contradictory use of words such as “This sentence is not true.”
