kinship

n. Relatedness which may be by birth, genetics, marriage, or adoption, which varies considerably among cultures. As an example, in some cultures relationship is defined, in part, by the time of year one is born, in some poly- androus societies a child may have more than one father, and in other societies the order of plural marriages affects kinship.
