intermittent reinforcement

n. Rewards which do not appear for every occurrence of a behavior that is rewarded. There are many ways of creating intermittent reinforcement schedules, the most common of which are ratio and interval schedules. In ratio schedules a reward is issued after a certain number of responses, and in interval schedules a reward is given at the end of a period in which an appropriate response has occurred.
