higher-order conditioning

n. A learning procedure in which the conditioned stimulus from one set of trials is used as the unconditioned stimulus for a second set of trials in which a neutral stimulus becomes a conditioned stimulus. If a bell has been paired with food so that it produces drooling, then a flashing light or other stimulus can be paired with the bell and can be made to produce drooling with food never paired with the light.
