gender identity disorder

n. Gender identity disorder (GID) is a problem in accepting the gender identity that matches an individual's biological sex. Symptoms of GID appear during childhood and include a combination of cross-sex behaviors, toy preferences, and activity preferences, combined with cross-dressing and choice of other- sex rather than same-sex friends. The most revealing symptom of GID is a child's stated and repeated desire to be the other sex. The DSM-IV-TR recognizes GID as a mental disorder among children but includes no equivalent diagnosis for adults. Boys are more often diagnosed with GID than girls, and as adults individuals with GID often seek sexual reassignment surgery.
