gate-control theory

n. A theory of pain in which it is supposed that there are neural gates in the spinal cord which regulate the amount of pain information flowing up the spinal cord to the brain and thus modulate pain perception. The gate consist of large sensory nerve fibers not directly connected in pain transmission, whose firing inhibits the small pain fibers from firing.
