functional autonomy
n. The tendency for motives and ideas to become independent of the circumstances in which they were first acquired. Thus a person may begin playing the piano because his or her mother makes him or her do it but continue to do so because it has become pleasurable in and of itself. Similarly ideas such as democracy may originally be values because they are presented with approval by authority figures but later be valued for other reasons.
