frequency theory
n. A theory of pitch perception in which it is supposed that the ear converts air pressure waves into nerve impulses by sending one impulse for each cycle of the air pressure wave. The neural system has a maximal firing rate of about 500 cycles per second, and so this may occur at low frequencies but cannot account for high- frequency hearing, which normally extends up to 18,000-20,000 cycles per second.
