form constancy
n. The tendency of humans to perceive that the shape of an object remains constant despite the fact that the light reflecting from the object and striking the retina will vary with angle, illumination, movement, and other variables. Thus, when we see a square, we perceive it as remaining square even if we move so that it begins to look like a diamond or trapezoid when seen at an angle. Also called shape constancy.
