flight-or-fight response
n. A term for the stress response identified by Walter Cannon in 1939. In response to a threat or challenge, this reaction prepares an organism to respond efficiently and effectively by mobilizing mental and physical abilities. The hallmark of the response is considered to be sympathetic nervous system arousal; it increases heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration in order to allow more oxygen to reach the brain and muscles.
