fetal alcohol syndrome

n. (FAS) A highly variable syndrome of low birth weight, retarded growth, abnormalities in the cranium and facial bones, and neurological difficulties, which may result in behavioral difficulties and retardation associated with alcohol consumption during pregnancy. In general, the more alcohol and the earlier in pregnancy it is consumed the greater the likelihood of these symptoms.
