family therapy
n. Any form of psychotherapy that takes the family as the unit of therapy and focuses on patterns of communication and relationship within the family as targets for therapeutic change. Family therapy originated in the work of Alfred Adler and has since been taken up from numerous theoretical viewpoints such as object relations and nondirective therapy and has numerous techniques and points of focus. The single commonality is the treatment of the family as a whole at least part of the time.
