ethnic minorities

n. Ethnic minorities are ethnic groups or members of ethnic groups in a given society who constitute a sociological minority. Although they may not necessarily constitute a numerical minority, ethnic minorities are often disadvantaged with respect to the dominant majority group in terms of social status, political power, wealth, or access to social capital. In the contemporary United States, the main groups of ethnic minorities are African Americans, Hispanics, Asian Americans, American Indians and Alaskan Natives, and Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islanders. Ukrainians in Poland, Hungarians in Romania, Muslim Turks in Bulgaria, and Roma (Gypsies) in several European countries are other ethnic minorities.
